Although he scored just 13 points in the first half (all in the first quarter), Laker guard Kobe Bryant exploded for 29 second-half points en route to a 97-92 victory over the visiting New York Knicks on Wednesday.

Bryant took 36 shots - hitting 15 - and converted 12 of 14 free-throw attempts for a season-high game total of 42. Smush Parker, Lamar Odom and Chris Mihm provided their routine assistance, each adding at least 10 points. But it was clearly all Kobe in the second half. In eight games this season, Bryant is averaging 31.4 points. His overall career scoring average is 22.5 points-per-game.

Oddly, Knick guard Stephon Marbury, who went for 45 points against the Lakers last season, scored just 4 on 2-9 shooting. Instead, Knick coach Larry Brown opted to use several first-year players in key minutes, including guard Nate Robinson, forward David Lee, and center Channing Frye, who led the team with
21 points.

The Lakers continue their homestand against the rival Clippers on Friday night.
